General Information
How do I apply for a license, change my address of Record, or file a complaint?
Please use the online licensing portal.
Each Registrant is responsible for informing the Board within thirty days of a change in his/her address. Address changes require the registrant’s full name, license type and number, old address, new address, social security number, date of birth, and an office telephone number.
You may change your address using the online feature above. It is incumbent for all registrants to maintain a current mailing and email address with the Board to receive renewal notices and information of changes to regulations pertaining to the practice of engineering and land surveying. A new address on letterhead or envelope is not construed as a request to change an address.
How long does it take to get a license?
Once all the documentation has been received for completion of the application for registration/examination, you can expect a response within 7 days. If you have an NCEES record, this time may be greatly reduced.
If I am in business for myself, must I complete an application for a Firm License?
The practice of professional engineering and land surveying in Georgia may be carried out by a firm, corporation, professional corporation, partnership, association, limited liability company, or other entity, which is organized or domesticated in Georgia, provided that one or more of the principals, officers, members or partners of the entity are Georgia licensed professional engineers or land surveyors. These requirements apply as well to branch offices of foreign firms (jurisdictions other than Georgia) which operate in Georgia. You may apply for a Firm license at https://gapelsb.evokeplatform.com. All entities who practice or offer to practice professional engineering or land surveying in this State must file an application with the board and receive a Firm License prior to practicing. Sole proprietorships are exempt from this requirement. Please refer to O.C.G.A. 43-15-23 for engineering entities and O.C.G.A. 43-15-23.1 for surveying entities. All Firm Licenses obtained from the Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors expire on June 30 of even-numbered years unless renewed.
This application process should not be confused with the additional requirement for out-of-state corporations to obtain a Certificate of Authority from the Secretary of State’s Corporation Division. An application may be downloaded from its site or obtained by mail by calling (404) 656-2817. Questions relating to obtaining a business license should be directed to the Secretary of State’s Corporations division, telephone number (404) 656-2817, or you may access its landing page directly.
Once I file a complaint, when can I expect a decision from the Board?
Investigations of complaints can be a lengthy process and may take many months to complete. The Board makes every effort to pursue the matter as soon as possible. However, some cases take longer than others due to the technical nature and circumstances of the complaint. All cases are initially reviewed by the Board Cognizant Member who decides if additional evidence is needed. The case may then be sent to an Investigator, another Board Member, a peer reviewer for another opinion on the matter, and/or the Attorney General’s office for formal hearings before the Board. The complainant will be notified when the case is concluded and informed of the Board’s recommendations and actions taken.
